Customs, police seize 250kg gold, foreign currency at HSIA

DHAKA, Feb 26, 2014 (BSS)- Customs, Customs Intelligence and Police seized 250-kg gold and foreign currencies worth of Tk 200 crore at Hazrat Shahjalal International Airport (HSIA) during the last one year.


Customs and law enforcement agencies also arrested 45 persons including cabin crew, customs official, employee and driver of Biman Bangladesh Airlines Limited.

Senior Assistant Superintendent of Police (ASP) of Armed Police Battalion (APBN) Alamgir Hossain Shimul told BSS that the law enforcement agencies also arrested 3,168 people on charges of smuggling and other illegal activities from June 2010 to February
2014.

"Around 38-kg gold, 15-20-kg gold ornaments and foreign currencies worth Taka 20.30 crore have been recovered from their possessions," he said.

Besides, the customs and law enforcement agencies seized Nikon, Sony (DLR) cameras, Samsung galaxy mobile phone sets and laptops on July 20, 2013.

Deputy Director of Customs Intelligence Mostafizur Rahman told BSS that customs officials seized 51.97 lakh Saudi Riyal worth of Taka 10.60 crore on September 10, 2013.

He said 30 people including cabin crews, officials, employees and car drivers have been arrested in this connection. Assistant Commissioner of Customs at Shah Amanat International Airport, Chittagong, Mashiur Rahman Mondol said customs officials also seized 10-kg abandoned gold bars worth Taka 4.50 crore from luggage area of the airport on February 21, 2014.

The customs officer said gold smugglers are still active to make their efforts successful.
