Tk. 10 crore gold seized at Shahjalal Airport

DHAKA, Feb 21, 2014 (BSS)-Customs department officials seized over 21-kg of gold in two separate incidents at Hazrat Shahjalal International Airport in the capital last night.

Customs and police sources said a security guard of Civil Aviation Authority, Bangladesh (CAAB), Saiful Islam, was arrested for his alleged involvement in the smuggling.

The customs officials recovered 11-kg of gold from the possessions of two passengers-Abul Hossain and Monir Hossain- coming from Singapore at 8pm.

On their arrival at the airport, the two passengers were passing the green channel with the help of the CAAB security guard. Being suspicious about the two, the officials searched their luggage and seized the gold, said director-general of the Customs Department Mainul Islam.

Besides, the customs department also recovered at least 100 abandoned gold bars from the boarding bridge of an Emirates Airways flight around 8pm.

The estimated price of the gold recovered in the two incidents is around Taka 10 crore. The arrested persons were handed over to Airport Police station.
